Better Cycle Network Planning
Connected, safe cycling infrastructure — making cycling a real everyday travel choice in Hong Kong.
Cycling has the potential to become a mainstream, everyday way of getting around — a reliable and flexible travel choice that also builds exercise into busy lives, with real benefits for public health.
The New Territories cycle track network has expanded steadily over the past decade and more, yet Hong Kong's cycling policy, route planning and design, supporting facilities and on-road driving culture remain unfriendly to people on bikes — and do nothing to encourage cycling as a daily mode of transport.
We advocate for a comprehensive cycling-friendly policy that formally makes cycling part of the public transport network: connected routes built to recognised safety standards, linking homes, workplaces and transport interchanges seamlessly so the two reinforce each other. Only systematic infrastructure and supporting planning can shed cycling's weekend-leisure label and turn it into an everyday choice people can confidently make.
A Connected Network
Comfortable, safe and continuous cycling routes that seamlessly connect homes, transport interchanges and everyday destinations.
Cycling-Friendly Design
Reforming outdated road standards to fully adopt the six core cycling design principles — coherence, directness, safety, comfort, attractiveness and inclusivity. Reallocating street space and priority keeps riders safe without sacrificing how smooth and comfortable the ride is.
Proper Parking Provision
Ample, secure cycle parking along streets, close to destinations and at public transport interchanges — so cycling can genuinely fit into everyday travel habits.
