Culture & Corks Vol.20 — The Language of Streets: How Urban Form Shapes Our Lives and Culture
From the bicycle on Nathan Road in Comrades: Almost a Love Story to the footbridges and escalators of Chungking Express, the streets we know so well are not just traffic arteries — they are symbols of the city's culture. How have Hong Kong's streets and urban environment changed over time, and how have those changes shaped the way we live?
In September 2024, we co-hosted this talk with cultural media space Kongcept. Behind street planning lies a design language that not only steers how we travel, but also reflects the development models and social values of different eras. From street scenes on film to experiments in the new towns, we traced how Hong Kong's streets have evolved, explored the subtle relationship between street planning, urban form and culture, and looked at how the planning logic behind our streets shapes everyday life and cultural identity.

Streets and their design quietly shape our health — traffic volumes and road widths directly affect a neighbourhood's air quality. In March 2024, we co-hosted this workshop with MaD Social Lab, inviting participants to start from their own neighbourhoods and, with local and overseas examples, imagine more liveable, people-oriented streets.

In August 2022, we were invited to take part in the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (Hong Kong) with "#咁理想條街點樣", a three-month exhibition at the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier. Starting from our Hong Kong Traffic Injury Collision Database, interactive panels showcased successful people-oriented street makeovers and prompted visitors to think about improving pedestrian safety — and to draw their own ideal street.

A series of expert panels bringing together transport planners, urban designers and academics to explore the possibilities for people-oriented streets in Hong Kong — starting with "Alternatives to the car-oriented approach?" — and to develop recommendations for the wider professional community.
Learn more →The Human Scale — Screening
We hosted a public screening of The Human Scale, Andreas Dalsgaard's acclaimed documentary on the work of Danish architect Jan Gehl. Following cities from Copenhagen to New York to Chongqing, the film shows how streets designed around people — rather than cars — create healthier, more liveable places. The screening was paired with a discussion on what these ideas mean for Hong Kong.
