The Human Scale — Screening

A documentary on Jan Gehl and the case for cities built at a human scale.

We hosted a public screening of The Human Scale, attended by more than 300 people. Directed by Andreas Dalsgaard, the acclaimed documentary explores the ideas of renowned Danish architect Jan Gehl and makes a simple but important point: for the past fifty years we have built our cities around cars and giant buildings, and forgotten what makes a city worth living in — people.

Travelling from Copenhagen to New York to Chongqing, the film shows how streets and spaces designed at a human scale create healthier, happier and more connected cities. After the screening, we held a discussion with guests including academic Sampson Wong, road safety engineering consultant Julian Kwong, Clean Air Network CEO Patrick Fung and architect Sarah Mui, exploring what Gehl's ideas mean for a high-density city like Hong Kong. Through real examples of street transformation from cities in the film, we hoped to spark new ways of imagining Hong Kong's streets and public spaces.

In the Film

A Human-Scale City

Jan Gehl's lifelong argument: cities work best when they are designed for people on foot, at eye level, not for cars at speed.

Lessons from Abroad

From Copenhagen's bike lanes to New York's reclaimed squares, the film shows human-centred change is possible anywhere.

What About Hong Kong?

Our post-screening discussion asked how these globally proven ideas could reshape one of the world's densest cities.

Keep the conversation going.
