People-Friendly Walking Environments

Better design to rebalance people and traffic — safe, comfortable and lively street space.

Walking is the foundation of our everyday journeys, yet street planning in Hong Kong has long treated it as a way to keep traffic moving. The result is streets that are hard to cross, where vehicles travel too fast, and pedestrian safety is put at risk. A street is not just a corridor for vehicle movement — it is public space that carries the life of a community.

We advocate for a comprehensive reform of street planning and design. These measures reinforce one another to genuinely reshape what a neighbourhood street is, so everyone can walk and linger in an environment that is safe, calm and green.

What We Call For

Safe, Convenient Crossings

Add and improve crossings, remove unnecessary railings and accommodate pedestrians' desire lines, with localised footpath widening near crossings to eliminate sightline blind spots — making crossing the street both easier and safer.

Shade, Greenery and Places to Pause

Plant more street trees to cool our streets and add seating to improve the basic walking experience. We also advocate converting some kerbside parking and traffic lanes into space for rest and outdoor dining, and creating pedestrian-priority zones at the heart of each district — encouraging people to stop and stay, and reviving the public life and economic vitality of our neighbourhoods.

Speed and Traffic Management

Roll out 30 km/h limits and traffic-calming design on local streets — raised tables, tighter corner radii and narrower lanes — and reduce through traffic, protecting pedestrians at source with forgiving spatial design.
